Beer City Erlangen -
23 Breweries and Brewing Sites
from Past to Present

Since the 17th century, Erlangen has been inseparably linked to brewing. Cool cellars, artisan brewing craftsmanship and an unparalleled density of breweries have made the city a true beer paradise – known far beyond the city limits. Around 1860, Erlangen surpassed Munich and Kulmbach in beer exports! This tour is a must! Duration: approx. 120 minutes (wheelchair accessible possible)
From the Beginnings to Today
Long before the 17th century, the first innkeeper families were already brewing beer here and the first beer cellars were created – the beginnings of a tradition that reaches into the 21st century.
The industry that shaped Erlangen's cityscape developed in the heart of the old town, the brewing centre. Today, the (probably) world's only brewery that brews inside a hill, stores inside the hill and serves its beer directly from the hill exists in "Erlanka"!
Breweries & Specialities
Beer in Erlangen is more than a drink, it's the DNA of the City – it is an expression of community, joy and Franconian way of life.
Local breweries offer unique beer specialities –
from cellar beer to seasonal rarities such as "Enno", the "Goldblondchen" or the "Bergkirchweih beer".
Don't miss the unique taste of Erlangen. Catch the spirit of the modern tradition!
Tour 3a) Beer City -
without tasting
In addition to the historic and current brewing sites, the tour also takes you through the baroque old town. (Duration approx. 120 minutes, wheelchair accessible possible)
Tour 3b) Beer City -
with tasting
Same as Tour 3a), but with tasting breaks – depending on opening hours and availability. Plus catering flat rate: €5 to €10
(Duration min. 180 minutes, partially wheelchair accessible possible)
Tour 3a): €18 p.p. (€15 reduced) / Groups by arrangement / open tours from 5 persons / please pre-register by email: info@erlangen-erleben.de
Tour 3b): €22 p.p. (€19 reduced) / plus tasting flat rate! / Groups by arrangement / open tours from 5 persons / please pre-register by email: info@erlangen-erleben.de
Cellar Kids -
Facts Worth Knowing
at the Foot of the Burgberg

The Erlangen beer cellars are unique places – 21km tunnels built into the hillside, shady and sociable. Their cultural highlight is the Bergkirchweih, the oldest and one of the largest beer festivals in Europe, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. But even outside the festival there is much history to explore at the foot of the hill.
Duration: approx. 60 minutes, wheelchair accessible
The Erlangen Beer Cellars
Carved into natural sandstone, the historic cellars offer cool enjoyment at around 8°C and a rustic atmosphere – an experience you can only find in Erlangen. People go "to the cellar" here. Also open outside the Bergkirchweih from April to September.
The Bergkirchweih
The Bergkirchweih has been held since 1755, what means it's 55 years older than munich Oktoberfest – history and historically significant places explained on the spot. The reason why the Bergkirchweih was worthy of being awarded as a Bavarian "Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2026.
Being Human
Packed lunch, music and toasting together in nature. "Open by tradition" - the DNA of the city. A festival for the whole family and pure joie de vivre! There are no titles and no formalities, here you are human and are allowed to be.
"Hogg Di 'ner her do"! (franconian spoken)
Price: €15 p.p. (€12 reduced) / Groups by arrangement / open tours from 5 persons / please pre-register by email: info@erlangen-erleben.de
Summit Seekers -
Facts Worth Knowing on
and around the Burgberg

Besides the historic beer cellars, there is much to discover that even locals find surprising. History and stories, culture and "lost places" around Erlangen's most important hill – the Burgberg. Duration: approx. 120 minutes, NOT wheelchair accessible (stairs, unpaved paths, inclines)
Secrets of the Burgberg
Hidden canals, lost cellars, snail hills, enicmatic gardens, green ice pits, steaming water reservoirs, sculptures in the depths? Where is the Solitude and a Philosoph Stone? Find out what it's all about on this surprising tour.
Historic Buildings
The visible and hidden monuments and buildings on and around the Burgberg are visited and filled with historical knowledge. There is more to discover here than beer cellars, the Platenhäuschen and the sculpture garden.
